At the Baselworld 2009, the Sinn 857 UTC stole the show with its superb tegimented steel case and bracelet produced in-house by Sinn’s case making company in Glashutte, Germany., extremely high anti-magnetic rating of 80,000 A/m and the anti-fog function. And it carries an automatic movement with a dual time zone function
Tegimented cases have a hardness rating of 1,200 Vickers, versus 200-240 Vickers for normal stainless steel cases. A Tegiment layer is not a coating of a foreign material, instead the steel is actually hardened. The primary advantage to a Tegimented case is extreme resistance to scratches and other case abrasions.
The Tegimented steel is very durable, by itself. But Sinn likes to take things to another level, they take the hardened steel and apply a black PVD treatment. This, of course, gives the steel a darker appearance, but it also gives it another layer of protection against scratches and abrasions. Basically, the tegimented steel cases are hard, the PVD treated tegimented steel cases are even harder.
The case features a copper sulphate capsule which reacts with moisture to diffuse and absorb humidity in the replica watches. This capsule may be viewed through a porthole in the left lug, and over time will turn a deep blue as humidity is absorbed. This technology not only provides a more stable environment for the movement, but also prevents fogging of the crystal when going from hot to cold environments or from humid to non-humid conditions (such air conditioned buildings).
Another Sinn engineering feat is the creation of a bezel that is secured by screws. This bezel design prevents the bezel from accidentally snapping off under impact. The inlaid aluminum ring featuring numerals and markers is anodized black for optimal legibility, while the triangle reference marker at 12 is applied with special paint for visibility.
The Sinn 857 UTC features protection from magnetic fields up to 80,000 A/m (Ampere per meter). The industry standard, to call a watch anti-magnetic, is 4,800 A/m. This Sinn, beats that number by more than 16 times. Wow.
A sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides, protects the dial. The case back is nickel free, perfect for those with allergic reactions to case metals.
This watch has a second time zone displayed by a skeleton yellow tipped hour hand. The second time zone can be set directly through the second position of the crown and uses a 24 hour indication to differentiate AM and PM.
The dial is matte black with Arabic numerals and offset date display at 4. The design and layout of this watch make it extremely easy to read in virtually all light conditions. For extremely low-light situations, the hands, hours markers and triangle at 12 o’clock are all luminous.
Watch is fitted with a Tegimented PVD steel bracelet with hex screws and solid end links.
